Help & Resources
Education
Anxiety disorders are among the most treatable mental health problems. Effective treatments involve education, cognitive behavioural therapy and/or medication.
Education. Understanding anxiety and the options available for treatment is the first vital step in recovery. Open to all (families, service providers, potential participants, etc.)
Cognitive Therapy
Cognitive therapy helps sufferers identify negative thought patterns that produce anxiety. Catastrophic thoughts are replaced with realistic and calming thoughts.
Behavioural Therapy
Behavioural therapy applies strategies to change maladaptive behaviours. Gradual exposure to the anxiety-provoking object or situation addresses avoidant behaviour. Relaxation techniques help calm and control physical sensations.
Medication
Medication such as the newer anti-depressant/anti-anxiety medications have become the first-line medication treatment for anxiety disorders. They are most effective when used in conjunction with cognitive behavioural therapy. Your physician and pharmacist are the experts in medication treatment.
